What Are Stair Treads and Risers?
Before any work begins, it helps to understand the two components that make up a timber staircase:
Treads are the horizontal surfaces you step on. These take the most wear and are typically the first to show scratches, dents, and finish deterioration.
Risers are the vertical panels between each tread. While they experience less foot traffic, they are highly visible and need to be finished consistently with the treads for a cohesive result.
Each component requires a slightly different approach in preparation and finishing — treads need compact machine sanding across a flat surface, while risers and edges require careful hand sanding to reach into corners and tight spaces without damaging surrounding surfaces.
Our Staircase Sanding & Polishing Process
Step 1. Assessment & surface preparation
We start with a thorough inspection of your staircase — checking the timber species, grain direction, existing finish type, surface wear, and the structural integrity of fixings. This tells us exactly what grit sequence, equipment, and coating approach will give you the best result.
All adjoining surfaces — walls, skirting boards, balustrades, and newel posts — are carefully masked and protected before any sanding begins. We treat your home with the same care we’d want for our own.
Step 2. Sanding — hand and machine
Staircase sanding is more labour-intensive than flat floor sanding. We use a combination of:
- Compact belt and orbital sanders for the flat tread surfaces
- Detail hand sanding for edges, corners, risers, and any decorative profiles
- Specialised edge sanders for the nose and side profiles of each tread
The sanding process works through multiple grit stages — coarse to strip back old finishes, paint, or glue; medium to level and smooth the surface; fine to prepare a clean, open-grained surface ready for coating. Every tread and riser is sanded to the same standard before we move to the next stage.
Step 3. Vacuuming & dust removal
Staircases collect dust in every corner, edge, and crevice. After each sanding stage, we vacuum thoroughly — including the back of risers, the underside of tread noses, and every joint. This step is critical: any dust left behind will be locked into the finish, creating surface imperfections that are visible under light. We don’t rush this.
Step 4. Coating & polishing
Once sanding is complete, we apply a premium-grade finish suited to your staircase’s timber species, usage level, and the look you want. Finish options include:
- Water-based polyurethane — low odour, fast drying, and durable. Ideal for homes with children or pets, and for lighter-toned timbers where you want to preserve the natural colour
- Solvent-based polyurethane — extremely hard-wearing with a richer, deeper finish. Best for high-traffic staircases or timbers like spotted gum and blackbutt where a warm amber tone enhances the grain
- Hardwax oil — a natural, penetrating finish with a softer matte look. Popular for oak and European timber species
Multiple coats are applied with a light sand between each one to ensure a flawless, bubble-free result. You can choose from matte, satin, or gloss sheen levels to suit your interior style.
Step 5. Staining & colour options
If you’d like to change or enhance the colour of your staircase, we offer a full range of staining options before the topcoat is applied. Whether you want a warm walnut tone, a cool grey wash, or a deep ebony finish, we can match or complement your existing floor colour. Staining is a popular choice for staircases where the timber species isn’t ideal for a natural finish, or where you want to create a deliberate contrast with the surrounding flooring.
Step 6. Final inspection & handover
Before we pack up, every tread and riser is inspected under strong directional light to check for any imperfections in the finish. Any areas needing a touch-up are addressed on the spot. Your staircase is handed over clean, polished, and ready to use — typically within 24 hours of the final coat being applied.
Timber Species We Work With
Different timber species respond differently to sanding and coating. Our Sydney staircase team regularly works with:
Jarrah
- a rich red-toned hardwood that sands beautifully and takes a deep, warm polyurethane finish
Oak
- popular in renovation projects, particularly European oak, which pairs beautifully with hardwax oil finishes
Pine
- softer and more prone to denting, requiring a lighter touch during sanding and a harder-wearing topcoat for protection
Blackbutt
- one of the most common species in Sydney homes, pale in colour and highly responsive to staining if a richer tone is desired
Spotted Gum
- a hard, dense Australian native with an interlocked grain that requires careful sanding direction and benefits from an oil-based finish to bring out its deep colour variation
Others
- Not sure what species your staircase is? Luis can identify the timber on inspection and recommend the most appropriate finish approach.
Staircase Restoration — Bringing Old Stairs Back to Life
Many of the staircases we work on haven’t been touched in decades. Old paint, worn varnish, carpet glue residue, and deep scratches are all completely resolvable with the right preparation and sanding approach.
Restoring wooden stairs is one of the most rewarding transformations we carry out — the before-and-after difference is dramatic, and it adds genuine value to the home. We’ve restored staircases in period terraces across Stanmore, Ashbury, and Summer Hill, as well as more modern staircases in newer builds across the Hills District, Northern Beaches, and Eastern Suburbs.
If your staircase has structural damage — loose treads, broken risers, or significant timber loss — we can advise on repairs needed before sanding begins. In most cases, minor repairs can be carried out as part of the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does staircase sanding and polishing take?
Most residential staircases in Sydney are completed within one to two days, including sanding and the application of two to three coats of finish. The exact timeline depends on the number of stairs, the condition of the existing surface, and the finish type selected. Water-based finishes dry faster and allow for quicker recoating than solvent-based products.
Can I walk on the stairs during the process?
During sanding and coating, the staircase is not accessible. We typically work from top to bottom, which means you may be able to access upper floors via an alternative route (if available) while lower sections are drying. We’ll discuss access and logistics with you before starting.
Do you offer staircase restoration near me in Sydney?
Yes — we service all areas across greater Sydney. Whether you’re in the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, North Shore, Hills District, Northern Beaches, or Sutherland Shire, we can come to you. Call Luis on 0406 261 606 to arrange an on-site measure and quote.
Can you match the finish on my staircase to my existing floors?
In most cases, yes. We’ll assess your existing floor finish during the quote and do our best to match the sheen level, tone, and colour. If the floor has been coated with a specific product, it helps to know the brand and finish type so we can replicate it as closely as possible.
Is sanding and polishing better than painting the stairs?
For timber staircases, sanding and polishing is almost always the better long-term choice. Paint sits on top of the timber and chips and peels over time, especially on high-traffic treads. A penetrating or surface-film finish bonds properly to the timber and wears far more gracefully — and it can be refreshed with a recoat in the future without stripping back to bare timber.
How much does staircase sanding and polishing cost in Sydney?
Pricing depends on the number of stairs, timber species, condition of the existing surface, and the finish selected. Most residential jobs in Sydney range from $800 to $2,500. Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote — Luis will assess your staircase on-site and give you a clear, itemised price.
